Good morning! Today I make the drive from Savannah to Daytona. I think its about a 5 hour drive through Jacksonville down the Atlantic coast which should be awesome. I have had time to reflect on my race and its apparent that I am way down on horsepower compared to some of the other bikes in my class. I expected this but reality really sucks! Later!

The opening round of the AHRMA National series race was held at Roebling Road, Georgia today. I raced in the Battle of the Twins Forumla II race and finished second. I got a pretty good start but I was a complete pussy in the first turn and went back to 8th place. I remained calm and just started picking the other racers off one by one. By the third lap I was in second but well behind the leader. I put my head down and tried to see if I could drop my lap times into the 1:25's hoping it would help me reel in first place. I was able to get down to a 1:25.03 which is not too bad considering I had never been on the track until yesterday. Unfortunately I did not catch the leader so I assume he was doing faster laps on his Touring Sport Ducati 1000PS. My ideal lap time based on my best segments was a 1:24.4. Oh well now I know the track and I can start making plans for my next ride there.

I completed the drive today so I will get a chance to relax and ride around a bit. I drove out to the track and it looks like it's in a housing development or at least I drove through a neighborhood right next to the track. I forgot the download cable for my camera so no pictures until I can hit Best Buy in the morning.

In Katja the dog news the surgeon in Transconna was unable to perform the type of repair that Katja needs to save the leg. He suggested Saskatoon or Calgary if we wanted to have them try and repair the pelvis. We decided to take her to Minneapolis and have the experts at the University of Minnesota Animal Hospital perform the surgery. She arrived there at 11:00PM so here is hoping the can fix her up six million dollar man style!!

The road trip begins!

On Friday night I was packed and ready to go which is so not like me. As I was checking things one more time the dogs bolted out the garage and down the street. About two minutes later Katja and Mini both ran out onto the main drag and Katja was hit by a car at 70kph or about 45mph. The lady who hit her aid she flew at least 30ft so I assumed the worst. I picked her up and we took her to the vet asap. After spending the night in dog emergency she seems to be recovering and it looks like she will survive!! Get better Katja! Sorry to Trista and Christian for leaving you in such a bad situation.

I had so much in motion that I could not alter my trip. I had to pick up the Sprinter in Minneapolis by 5pm or they would be closed. Kent Hickman met me at the house at 6:00am on Saturday and off we drove. We picked up the van and then moved the bikes and gear over from the trailer. I would like to take a moment and thank Kent for being there for me 110% of the time. Kent and Thorsten are the best!

After a quick dinner Kent headed back to home and I started the drive to Roebling Road Georgia, Last night and today I made it to Nashville TN so it looks like I will make it in plenty of time.

One week to Roebling and Daytona

So I have one week left to finish the bike, load up and then on Sunday drive to Savanna, Georgia. I expect it will take me three days to drive there. I have not chosen a trailer yet but most of my gear is ready to be loaded. I can take the 30 ft team trailer and then stay in it or I can take a 12 ft trailer and then stay in hotels. I will make the choice Wednesday. I also spoke to my parents today so after the race on Tuesday I will probably ride down to Ft Myers Beach and visit them. Not much else to report, I might sign up for the Doug Polen school in Roebling to learn the lines as long as they will still let me out for my practice sessions.

My mother was hit by a car while crossing the street. The driver of the car was texting and driving but my Mom was also not at a cross walk. Now my Mom and I have both been hit by cars. I was on a motorcycle but still thats got to be rare!

Preparing for 2010.

As of today here is what I can tell you about TPL Racing for 2010. First of all the team will be a little smaller in 2010 because novice racer Danny St Jean will not be racing in 2010. Danny has decided to concentrate on other aspects of his life which include becoming the president of the MRA for the next 3 years.

Bruce Macaulay has been promoted to expert and will be racing a GSXR 600 in the expert class. Bruce is still learning so we expect he will even go faster on a brand new bike with all the trick parts.

Jason Morell will be returning on his 2008 GSXR 750. Jason will also be supplying the team tires through Morell Racing.

Rod Snyder is switching to Ducati this year and riding an 1198S in Superbike and a 900SS in Lightweight superbike.

Team riders Garry Murray and Fred Marriot are expected back but they are still in negotiations with sponsors so there is nothing to report at this time.

TPL Racing has also adopted two newbie racers for 2010. Kawasaki rider Cynthia Karpan will continue receiving support from TPL Racing as will Gordon Alton who will be racing a GSXR600 for the novice championship.

We expect to add some important new sponsors in 2010 so keep dropping by to see whats going on!

Ducati 1198 parts starting to trickle in

Some more of the Ducati 1198 parts are arriving which is great because I can start installing them and getting the bike ready for whatever track we end up heading to this winter. I still cant make up my mind on the brand of exhaust but the Mircrotec ECU from DucShop seems like the best option for fuel and Ducati Traction Control management. Thanks to Sportbike Track Gear for hooking me up with the Vortex Clip-ons!

Yamaha Champions Pro School or not?

For the last few years I have felt like some old habits are keeping me from being a better rider! I have been giving serious consideration to the Yamaha Champions School in Las Vegas. It's the only school out there that offers specific training for racers. The reviews are good and the deductible for a crash is $200.00

Guess I will think about it this week and then decide.

All of the bikes are now at the shop (plus a few) and it is a giant cluster! I cleaned up a little today but its going to take a major team effort to get things organized.

The 1198 is getting new brake lines this weekend and a new Brembo 19x18 master. I ordered orange lines from our sponsor Galfer but actual color is more of a salmon! OMG they are something else and not in a good way! I will also mount the Starlane GPS this weekend.

The 900SS lightweight superbike needs some lighter wheels! Aftermarket magnesium wheels are legal so I have to find a way to get them!

Went to the MRA meeting tonight, not much new as the Sports Federation guys got their wires crossed and assume we where runners who ran on roads. Oh well the next meeting will be with the right guy. Night!

New Rules for 2010?

I have been hearing that the MRA is considering changing the race distances in 2010. The Superbike race might now go back to 20 laps and the 600 race might be a 15 lapper. I have also heard some rumblings about the Dash for Cash race being dropped. Time will tell but it could be really cool if we get some changes!

Not much else going on, lots of buzz about taking the race bikes to Las Vegas and doing some racing/trackday stuff down there over the winter.

Settling in for Winter

Well all of the bikes are upstairs in the shop and it looks like we have some fun work ahead of us before spring. I can't wait to start tearing shit apart and making things better. I am super happy with the Ducati 900SS but I might make a few mods to her before spring. The 1198S just needs a few more parts and it could be the best bike I have ever ridden. Cynthia has some sweet parts for her Ninja and we need to build Bruce a GSXR600 monster if he is going to get on the podium every round next year!!

Jason is keeping his GSXR750 and Garry is searching for a Ducati 848 but if he can't find the right deal he will be sticking with the Ninja 600RR. Danny is taking the year off from racing to take over the president roile of the MRA. I am not sure what Freddie is up to but no doubt we will find out soon!

The 1198S is coming home!!

I finally found a Ducati 1198S at a price that made sense to convert into a race bike for 2010. I have been dreaming of riding a Ducati 1198S with traction control since it was announced last winter.

Thanks to Formula Suzuki for all of their support in 2009. I think my GXSR1000 is a fabulous race bike in the right hands as Lennon Stevens is proving every race weekend.

Thanks to Andy and Thorsten for driving to Texas and back to get the bike over the Labour day weekend. You guys rock!

Note to self, if your GSXR wheel goes on way too easy then you are prolly missing a spacer! Thank god nothing other than this happened as I was trying to set a fast lap at the time. That's two self-induced mechanical failures this year that could have ended badly.

Not much new to report, I took the #12 bike apart to make sure that the ISC valve was operating properly as I am having a hot stalling problem. I will continue testing that tonight and then prep the bike for the next race.

TPL racing continued it’s 2009 race season will another strong weekend in round two of the MRA Championship Series. Team riders Bruce Macaulay, Danny St Jean, and Fred Marriot finished on the podium in Sundays races.

Fred Marriot #97 Expert: Over the break TPL racing changed just about everything on Fred’s bike to make him more comfortable on his 2008 Suzuki GSXR 750. The changes helped him drop his lap times and get closer to the front but the front three guys are still a few seconds faster. “ I had an issue with traction today, the bike is now steering well but I can’t carry any speed through the faster turns because I am sliding around. I am not sure what the issue is but I will try a harder compound on the front and see if that improves the feel for the next round”

Garry Murray #66 Expert: Overall Garry had a strong weekend collecting valuable points in the 600 championship and is currently second in the championship. Garry’s ZX6R performed well over the weekend, but felt he could have finished higher in the standings. A poor choice in front tire compound resulted in the inability to run fast lap times and he was off pace for the day. Garry will be discontinuing the use of the D.O.T tires and permanently move to the Bridgestone slicks.

Rod Snyder #121 Expert: Rod is coming to terms with his 2008 GSXR1000 but a mechanical error installing the rear wheel lead to a failure of the rear brake carrier in the last practice session. Rod was able to borrow TPL satellite rider Francisco Alvarado’s GSXR750 A-bike to complete on race day which relegated Francisco to his B-bike. “I can’t thank Francisco enough for lending me his bike. A few other racers had bike issues today and were not able to race so Francisco lending me his A-bike was way way beyond the call of duty for sure. I had some great battles out there today and we mostly came out on top” Despite not having any time on Fran’s bike this year I felt right at home!

Danny St Jean #34 Novice: “Another good round for myself, I fought with Bruce & Andrew through all races, received 2 second place finishes in Superbike & Open, and two third place finishes in Dash For Cash, and Formula Xtreme. I had a few scary moments with the front in the first race going through turn 1, bike just did not want to stick, adjusted air pressure and changed the suspension adjustments, things were better. By the end of the Superbike race, my front tire was pretty much finished and I just muscled the bike around for the rest of the day. Want to thank Andrew & Bruce for all the fun, next time I want a race win though. I'd like to thank my teammates for all their help in setting up my bike, and to the team principal for bringing my bike to the track, and helping with all things necessary to race. I would also like to thank my wife Carla for coming out to the track and helping in the pits”

BIR Short Course June 22nd 2009

Bruce and I made the road trip down to BIR to try out the new short course at speed! It was Africa hot and muggy as hell but we had a great day! I even managed to slide the back end in turn two and live! Good times!

The TPL Derbi scooter has been repaired and is ready to be picked up! 16kms to the first warranty claim is just not that good. Hopefully she will be good from now on!

TPL racing started the year off in excellent fashion with team riders Garry Murray, Bruce Macaulay, Danny St Jean, and Fred Marriot finishing on the podium in the Sundays races despite the unseasonably cold weather and strong winds.

Fred Marriot #97 Expert: Fred struggled with the suspension settings on his new Suzuki GSXR 750 and was unable to run the sub one minute laps times of the front three racers. However even though he did not perform to his full potential he did score valuable point towards the overall championship. The team will take a look at his bikes geometry over the break and see what we can do to make it more comfortable for him.

Rod Snyder #121 Expert: Rod had a mixed day, his race results where not that good but his lap times where good enough to run in the guys in front of him if he could get a decent start. Rod had terrible starts on his new GSXR1000. Twice he stalled and left the start line after the pack was in the first turn. In the other two races he got back of the pack starts which hindered his ability to get to the front.

I was able to get Danny's, Freddies, and my bike serviced tonight so that just leaves Cynthia's to finish tomorrow. Jason is taking his bike in for a dyno run in the AM to set up the TEKA mapper for the fuel injection. Garry was working on his bike so rode Carmella over for a quick beer!! Bruce called and he is working to have his bike done by Saturday!

Our TPL circus tent arrived so we will have it for the first race!! Plus our team jackets came in!!! Things are coming together!!!

Since Derbi is a spanish company we have decided to name her Carmella.

The Actual model is the Derbi Red Bullet! Kinda looks more orange than red but hey its perfect for running errands.

It's hard to believe that the first MRA race weekend is coming up so fast! I can't seem to catch up and get all the stuff I need done finished. I need more hours in a day.

The MRA school is another concern, I hope its not a busy as I fear it might be. I have been getting an ever increasing number of emails regarding the school. This could really be the start of something!!!

Ducati's and Slipper Clutches

Well after 3 months of talking about it I finally installed the slipper clutch in the Sport Classic. Thanks to Garry and Jason for providing moral support and tooling so I could get the job done. Also thanks to Appleton Estates Rum and my good friend ice!

Off to the border at 7:30am with Fran followed by a little oil change action on the GSXR1000! Tomorow night it's dinner at the Murray's and a little Thirsty Lion bar action!

Ducati ST3 from Mesa to Winnipeg May 5-7

The rear tire says it all. 3785kms in 58 hours. I have no ride pictures because I never stopped for longer than a piss. The ST3 was near perfect for those 13 hour days in the saddle.

Average Speed 78.9MPH

Fuel Economy 33.1MPG

Top Speed 124.6MPH

Highlights:

1) The 4 corners area. Great twisty roads, no cops, Wile E Coyote landscape. HWY 163

2) Eisenhower Tunnel Colorado. 11, 013ft and a raging snowstorm! Dude it looked like the "Shining" up there! I70

3) Aberdeen South Dakota. Pheasant capitol of the free world. Watching these hunting shows you would think its hard to kill one! Just drive on the road, I dodged thousands! HWY 281

4) Blowing through a radar trap in the Rockies in the snow. Maybe it was shock of them seeing bike but I was speeding and the cops just smiled as I raced down the 40 mile road to Denver. I70

5) Monument Valley. Just like the post cards! HWY 163

6) Moab to I70. HWY 128 along the river is simply magic! Watch for the free range cattle!!

7) My Frank Thomas riding suit! It worked at all temperatures!!!!

Hello everyone, there has been allot going on since my last post. Then team went to Hastings Nebraska to practice at Motorsports Park Hastings and I rode my new ST3 from Mesa Arizona to Winnipeg, Manitoba. The bikes are working well and the guys are all riding really well.

The next thing you know you are an owner of something!!! Yesterday after about three seconds of deliberation and with way too little thought, I bought a Ducati ST3 sport tourer in Mesa AZ? WTF was I thinking? Now I have to figure out how to get it home!! Oh well, I have always wanted one so now the dream is a reality and I stole it!

I like the fact that the bike is the most sporting bike in its class. It is more than capable of doing a track day or a 700 mile ride!!

We started to mount the race bodies last night!

Cynthia's is 50% done but as usual nothing is perfect when it comes to race bodies.

It's looking pretty sweet but it's not the hot pink we ordered!

I guess we will just order a roll of pink fur and do some racing stripes down the middle!! Sweet!

Not much going on over here in Quebec. It's cold and mega windy here so I have not really explored much today. Meetings start tomorrow and then home!

I got a call from Hetty @ Pembina Parcel and she reminded me that the Red River is going to crest on Thursday and we should have all of our packages out of her warehouse by then. That includes our race bodies!

It's almost April so Nebraska is right around the corner!!

World of Wheels and Quebec City!

Well it turns out that the motorcycle show and my board meeting in Quebec City are on the same weekend! This will be the first bike show I have missed in a while. The Manitoba Roadracing Assoc has a nice booth going in the show and TPL satellite racer Francisco's GSXR750 will be on display on the stand! Hopefully someone will take a few pictures and we can post them up!

Meanwhile the family and I are going to Quebec before my meeting to do some touristy stuff. I posted a couple of picture of Quebec City so you could get a feel for how non-north american looking it is. In the top picture the big building that looks like a castle is our hotel. It's called Le Château Frontenac. Cool!

The team intro invites are done, here is a sample. I think Kedrick printing did a fine job. In person they are intense!

The crappy part is we only have room for 60 people with the liquor license so its going to be hard to invite everyone we want.

Going to the shop today to take the forks off my bike and install the Ohlins 25mm kits. Jason is doing some safety wire drilling on his bike.

Big Sand made a first pass on our pit shirts today so I thought I would post them up so you all could see them. The color on the old Blackberry camera is not so good! Version 2.0 will have bigger logos front and back.

Hey now. Well we worked on the bikes last night at ye old shop. I think I screwed up more than I fixed. Cynthia's prototype GPR damper kit came in so we hooked that up, Danny was working on his clutch switch jumper and that was about it.

DP sent us a huge care package of pads and swag so we ripped throught that.

WSBK is on Saturday, can't wait.

I have to go to the border and pick some more parts! Hell Ya!

Here is a picture of how the bikes looked today. Kinda lonely really. As you can see the bodies have not arrived yet. The good news is that is allowing us to catch up on other team related stuff. The Daytona 200 is on TV tonight and it sounds like at least 30 people are coming out to the Thirsty Lion to see it.

The team came in and we worked on the bikes last night. Danny installed his new chain and sprockets while Fred and I installed the forks on his bike. I was also able to strip down Christian's KX65 so I could power wash it and install the new body. The Daytona veiwing party is tomorrow so that will be a good chance to see some of the racers. I should also mention that we will be using Tyr Sox tire warmers this season. Morell Racing has them if anyone needs a set.

Conrats to Ben Spies for doing so well in his first WSBK race. Whoever doubted him should be marrying a goat right now. Not much else new today. I applied the new decal kit to the new plastic on Christian's KX65 this morning. I also spoke to Chad at MC Pro Design http://www.mcprodesign.com/ about the paint on the team bikes so I expect we will be seeing some bodies soon. Garry picked up my Ohlins 25mm fork kit at the border so I will install that this week and then set the preload on my bike. We also have to install the Race Tech revised forks that Dave Rand http://www.capitolmotosports.com/ put together for Freddies bike.

The weekend is here! This is an especially good weekend because WSBK has its first 2009 season race in Phillip Island. Formula Suzuki is having us over to watch the race at the dealership.

TPL wise we continue to get more of the little details completed as we prepare for testing in Nebraska in May. Race bodies are being painted and bolts are being drilled!

The guys can in last night and we worked on the bikes. Much progress was made and we are now nearing the point where we could mount body work if we had it. Fran's motorcycle is done. Cynthia's is pretty close and mine is 96% there. The team leathers are at Guy Anthony and our pit crew shirts and hats are supposed to be done soon!

Welcome to the new TPL Racing Blog! Stop by and keep up with our race progress during the 2009 Season.

Right now we are preparing our motorcycles for the upcoming season. This year four of us have new bikes so there is lots of work to be done.

We try and meet every Wednesday so we can complete the bikes before our first event in May. The photo below shows what the bike should look like if we get our work done! That's TPL racer Jason Morell on the left, myself in the middle and Garry Murray on the right
